Average glucose and what it tells you

Updated June 19, 2026

Average glucose is the mean of your readings over a period. It is a quick summary of where your glucose has sat overall.

What it does and does not show

  • It shows the overall level across the period.
  • It does not show the swings. A steady day and a day of big highs and lows can share the same average.

For that reason, average glucose is most useful read together with your time in range and your variability. Together they describe both the level and the shape of your glucose.

What matters most is your own baseline and how your average moves over time, not a comparison against a fixed target.
